How to Change Your Gmail Nickname (Settings & Steps)

When you send an email, the recipient sees a name — not your email address. That name is your Gmail display name, and it’s easy to change. Useful for going by a nickname, updating after a name change, or fixing a typo from when you created the account.

Changing Your Gmail Display Name (Desktop)

1. Open Gmail → click the gear icon (top right) → See all settings
2. Go to the Accounts and Import tab
3. Under Send mail as, click edit info
4. Enter your preferred name
5. Click Save Changes

Emails you send will now show this name. Note: this doesn’t change your Google Account name — only what Gmail recipients see.

Changing Your Google Account Name (Affects Everything)

If you want to change the name across all Google services (Gmail, YouTube, Drive, etc.):

1. Go to myaccount.google.com
2. Click Personal info (left sidebar)
3. Under Basic info, click Name
4. Edit your first and last name
5. Click Save

This changes your name everywhere in Google’s ecosystem.

Mobile (Gmail App)

1. Open Gmail → tap your profile icon (top right)
2. Tap Manage your Google Account
3. Go to Personal info tab
4. Tap Name → edit → Save

Important Notes

• Gmail doesn’t allow symbols or Unicode in the display name field — keep it plain text
• Changes may take a few hours to reflect in sent emails
• Recipients who already have you in their contacts may still see the old name until they update their contact info
