The earliest documented use of “Big Apple” for New York City comes from John J. Fitz Gerald, a horse racing columnist for the New York Morning Telegraph in the 1920s. He heard Black stable hands in New Orleans refer to New York’s racetracks as “the big apple” — meaning the big prize, the ultimate destination on the racing circuit.

Fitz Gerald liked the phrase so much that he started using “The Big Apple” in his column as a nickname for New York City. Over the next decade, the phrase spread through racing culture.

The Jazz Connection (1930s-40s)

Musicians in the 1930s jazz scene picked up the term. “Playing the Big Apple” meant performing in New York — the biggest stage, the ultimate gig. Jazz legends like Charles Gillett used it to describe the city’s unmatched music scene.

The Tourism Campaign (1970s)

By the 1970s, New York was struggling. High crime, financial crisis, and a terrible reputation. The New York Convention and Visitors Bureau launched a massive campaign using “The Big Apple” as the city’s branding. It featured red apple logos on buttons, stickers, and ads everywhere.

It worked. The campaign helped reshape New York’s image, and “The Big Apple” became permanently welded to the city’s identity.
