How to Change Someone's Nickname on Discord (Complete Guide)

Discord handles nicknames differently from most platforms. You have a global username and per-server nicknames — which means someone can be “Pixel” in your gaming server and “Dr. Smith” in a professional one. Here’s how to manage all of it.

Changing Your Own Nickname (Any Server)

1. Open the server where you want a different name
2. Click the server name at the top → Edit Server Profile
3. Type your new nickname in the Server Nickname field
4. Click Save

Your global username stays the same — only your display name in that specific server changes.

Changing Someone Else’s Nickname (Admin/Mod)

You need the Manage Nicknames permission:

1. Right-click on the person’s name in the member list
2. Select Edit Server Profile
3. Change their Server Nickname
4. Click Save

Note: You cannot change the nickname of someone with a higher role than yours. Server owners can’t have their nicknames changed by anyone except themselves.
